A modern perspective on symmetry identifies the topological invariance of symmetry operators as their defining property. Besides suggesting generalisations of the usual concept, this viewpoint renders results and methods from topological quantum theory amenable to the treatment of symmetries. Focusing on the simple setting of generalised Ising models, I will discuss the topological approach to the notions of duality and gauging.
